County Councillors of all parties today supported Cllr Dermot Roaf in his suggestions for the West End development. Cllr Roaf proposed a number of measures that would be essential for a successful re-development of the Westgate Centre and the whole west end of Oxford - including improvements for cyclists, pedestrians and buses.
Cllr Roaf said, "For the west end of Oxford to really work, so that both the residents living there and people using the area for work or recreation have a pleasant environment, there must be a real emphasis on public transport and encouraging people to walk and cycle. To clog up the roads with more cars will simply make the area unattractive and people will not want to go there."
The County Council also supported the principle of investigating whether the Worcester Street car park could be returned to its former use as a canal basin. Cllr Jean Fooks, speaking in support, said, "Oxford city centre is short of public open space. This site offers a splendid opportunity to create a new space, with buildings around, in the heart of the city. How pleasant it could be, particularly in weather like today's, to be able to sit by the water and watch the boats."
