Oxfordshire Liberal Democrats are calling upon the County Council to support European Car Free day on 22nd September. Cllr Jean Fooks' motion at next week's Council meeting points out that the County's own transport policies promote park and ride, and other sustainable forms of transport, especially in Oxford. She hopes that the County Council will support the City Council in promoting Car Free Day.
"Although for just one day," said Jean, "it can help in giving people a chance to try not to use their cars in Oxford, and they might then be encouraged to use alternative methods of transport on other days as well from time to time. No-one, of course, is suggesting that people living some way away from public transport or needing their cars for some purpose should be banned from using them, but for one day we are asking them to think first whether their car journey is really necessary."
The Liberal Democrats are also running an online poll on their website www.oxfordshirelibdems.org.uk to ask the public for their opinion of car free day. "This will help us in deciding whether there is public support for this initiative and whether to support it in future," said Jean.
