Dear Sir
Cllr John Howell cannot shift blame away from the Conservatives' sorry record on protecting the Green Belt.
Look at the evidence - two out of the three District Councils controlled by the Conservatives, namely Cherwell and West Oxfordshire, came out in favour of development in the Green Belt. In the County Council debate on November 1st 2005, the Conservative party was split, with ten members voting in favour of development and four abstaining. Those wanting to see building in the Green Belt included Cllr Tilley who happens to be leader of the Conservative group on the Vale of White Horse District Council - that in itself puts a big question mark over the Green Belt policy of Conservatives on the Vale Council. Just as well it is a Liberal Democrat authority!
In contrast to the Tories, Liberal Democrats have consistently upheld the Green Belt on District and County Councils over many years, and this is known and appreciated by their electorate - a fact that John Howell is clearly uncomfortable with as it shows up his party so badly.
One final thought, since Conservatives on West Oxfordshire have shown how little they value the Green Belt, are we to assume that their views reflect those of their local MP, and Conservative Party leader, David Cameron?
Yours sincerely
Cllr Anne Purse
