I am pleased that Councillor Waine and county officers are now working directly with the Dunmore Schools (letters, 18th December) to give all the children the opportunity of a sustainable and excellent primary education.
The basic problem was that local councillors and school governors were not involved at an early enough stage in the discussion about the options for the future of Dunmore Junior School. Councillors and governors were only informed after the options were chosen and had no chance of influencing the nature of the consultation. To school staff, parents and governors the proposals came as a bolt from the blue. The consultation process has caused much anguish to parents and children throughout Abingdon, which does not provide a good atmosphere for children's learning.
I have no intention of playing politics with children's education, but in the current system the one-party Conservative cabinet has to take responsibility for the decisions it makes.
Yours faithfully
Cllr Zoé Patrick
