Maintaining Pavements, Cycleways and Roads Properly

The alternative budget produced by the Liberal Democrats for the County Council invests additional money in highways. They propose an extra £½m for maintaining pavements, cycleways and roads for 2007/08.

The Liberal Democrats have also proposed extra money for weed clearance, and ditch and gully cleaning, as well as matching Cabinet proposals for cleaning street signs and furniture.

Liberal Democrat spokesperson on transport, Cllr Bob Johnston, said, "our budget aims to prevent the resurfacing of a large proportion of our roads from heading towards being once every thousand years again, like it was the last time the Tories ran the County."

The Liberal Democrats are also proposing to reintroduce parking charges for evenings and Sundays in Oxford City Centre. Bob pointed out that the purpose of these charges was to cut congestion and prevent people from parking where they should not, but any surplus would be reinvested on further improving the pavements and roads in future years.
