Cllr Zoé Patrick, Leader of the Opposition on Oxfordshire County Council, commented: "I am pleased to hear that at long last Keith Mitchell has seen sense over the replacement of flagstones in the Common Hall café at County Hall. Liberal Democrats have always believed that the most sensible and inexpensive solution was to replace the carpet when deemed necessary. Indeed, we did not feel the carpet had yet reached the end of its life.
"However, for some strange reason last summer, this carpet was ripped up without any explanation. On investigation, I discovered there were plans afoot to spend £33,000 renovating the top surface of the flagstones. Unfortunately, what the Leader of the Council failed to do was to seek authorisation of this costly proposal from City and County planners, who would not have approved such a move. Equally English Heritage needed to be consulted and were not.
"It now transpires that, if done properly, cleaning and replacing the stones would cost of the order of £60,000 with no guarantee that this would not cause further damage to this important listed building.
"I find this whole debacle absolutely amazing, and was delighted that after my questioning at full Council on two occasions, Cllr. Mitchell has written to inform me that a new carpet will be provided after all. Liberal Democrats at the County Council are pleased that common sense has prevailed."
