Liberal Democrats on the County Council are asking the Council Leader to ensure that the government is asked for more information about the suggestion that a nuclear power station could be built at either Didcot or Harwell. Traffic and water usage are already major issues in Oxfordshire, and the south east generally, and there would be other major concerns if either location were being seriously considered.
Cllr Alan Armitage, who is asking for this clarification in a motion to next week's full Council meeting, said:
"Whether or not we favour nuclear power, it is impossible to take part in a worthwhile consultation - which the government claims to want - when we have no idea if or how the associated issues would be solved. My motion tries to get the government to realise that nuclear power stations don't exist in a vacuum - they affect people's lives in all kinds of ways. For example, what happens if terrorists create a major incident there, in such a densely populated area? Where is all the extra water going to come from that these power stations need - we already have annual water crises in Oxfordshire? And will the A34 be upgraded at last to handle all the extra traffic?"
