Local Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Barton and Churchill, Roz Smith, is to ask the Council to improve the appearance of the subways at Green Road roundabout in her division. Roz said at yesterday's North East Area Committee meeting that using the subway is a much safer way for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the roads near the roundabout, and paid tribute to the City Council cleaners who come out when there are reports of rubbish, broken glass etc. However more could be done to improve the appearance and Roz is asking the County Council to consider painting the walls with anti-graffiti paint or even a mural.
Roz said, "I use this subway regularly myself, and I think even more people would use it more if it looked brighter, using anti-graffiti paint so it is not defaced. I think it would be a good idea to paint a colourful mural - perhaps linked to local author Lewis Carroll and his Narnia books? Perhaps the local schools could have a competition to design it? I will today be asking the County Cabinet member for Highways Implementation to consider this suggestion seriously. It is a shame that the opportunity to redecorate the subway was not taken when the works were done to improve the rest of the Green Road roundabout."
