Subway Success

September 6, 2007 12:11 PM

Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Barton & Churchill, Roz Smith, today presented a petition to save a well-used subway in central Headington from closure. Over 300 local residents had signed the petition, after a consultant's report recommended replacing the subway with a pelican crossing.

At today's Transport Decisions Committee meeting, Roz spoke putting forward local concerns. The Committee agreed to defer the closure and investigate the impact of a new pelican crossing would have on traffic flow.

Roz said: "I agree with the aims of the Headington strategy to make the shopping area more pleasant and less cluttered. I would like to see the ugly old railings around the subway replaced, removal of unnecessary traffic signs and safer routes for cyclists.

"However, at the moment, the subway remains the safest way to cross the road, and local people have shown that they wanted it to remain."
