Organisers and supporters of a scheme in Wantage to help elderly and other residents with mobility problems have welcomed a £5000 grant from the County Council by launching a new recruitment drive for new drivers.
The successful Car Scheme relies on volunteer drivers to help local residents with mobility problems to get to medical and other appointments across Oxfordshire and the new grant will help the service, run by the Wantage based Independent Advice Centre (IAC), to operate for a further four years. The service covers its costs by charging 37p per mile, with a minimum charge of £3.50 return.
County Councillor Jim Moley backed the application for the grant and welcomed its approval. He said: "The news of this new grant will be a major boost to the car scheme and it will ensure the service will continue for at least four years. When the application was considered, the County Council was very impressed with the efficiency and low cost of the scheme, which provides over 9000 passenger journeys a year.
"The Vale of the White Horse is a very rural area so this car scheme is a significant support to a large number of people who might otherwise find themselves unable to travel to important appointments. However, it cannot work without volunteer drivers, who receive 35p per mile mileage allowance.
"I urge any interested drivers to contact the Car scheme's manager, Wendy Watson, on 01235 770318, or by calling at the Wantage based Independent Advice Centre."
