If we are to maintain Economic Competitiveness, and Support and Develop Thriving Communities, we need more emphasis on children and young people. Not just on schools and educational achievement, important though those are, but also on providing an environment in which children can reach their full potential both in work and outside it. Section 5.4 has a number of key priorities from the Children and Young People's Plan, which we support wholeheartedly. What is not spelt out there, in particular, and I think should be mentioned, is the need to provide much more help for families with disabled children, who face an almost intolerable burden every day.
Not every child can achieve five GCSEs at grade A* to C, but every child can, given the right environment, contribute to society and feel valued as a person. It is obvious that today's children are tomorrow's adults and parents; it is their future we are planning and we must get it right.
These principles should be included in the Themes - as we shall not achieve a sustainable community unless we pay more attention to the needs of those who need support, enabling everyone to feel part of that community.
