We believe in empowering citizens and communities, so that local groups of people can influence the provision of services which they need and rely on. However, power - and money-rests too much with the centre. Too many of our taxes - over 90% - are raised by the Government and administered from Westminster. The system of council taxation weighs unfairly on the poor at double the rate of inflation.
The recent Comprehensive Spending Review means a real term increase in the National Health Service budget of 4%, whilst in Social Care the increase is 1% with an expected 3% efficiency saving. Hence, the crisis we face in providing social care. The provision of long term care in this country and county is a modern day scandal.
I urge Council to support Cllr Janet Godden in requesting that the County's Citizen Panel is consulted on the availability and adequacy of adult social care services in Oxfordshire in good time for its response to help inform the Council's budget debate.
