Lib Dem Councillor Slams Tory Council for Speed Limit Error

5.06.29pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 8th Aug 2006

Roz Smith, the County Councillor for Barton and Churchill in Oxford, has today slammed the Conservative County Council on learning that an "error" has meant that the Oxford Eastern by-pass 50mph speed limit, introduced after an accident killed three youngsters and another car passenger, is unenforceable.

Roz said, "I am as appalled as no doubt all the local residents and other users of the road are to learn that the County Council has made a dreadful mistake and that the speed limit on the Eastern by-pass is not enforceable (Oxford Mail, 8/8/06) . I am especially horrified when we recall that the introduction of the speed limit and the installation of the barrier was delayed for six months by the Conservative administration at County Hall because, they said, they wanted time to investigate and introduce the scheme 'properly'."

Roz said she will now be asking serious questions about how this mistake happened, and how Oxfordshire residents can be sure that this will never occur again.
