More needs to be done on railways, say Lib Dems

4.40.59pm GMT Wed 21st Mar 2007

Lib Dem Transport spokesperson, Bob Johnston, speaking at yesterday's meeting of the Oxfordshire County Council Cabinet, pointed to deficiencies in trying to improve rail links in the Transport Capital programme lasting until 2011.

Bob welcomed the gist of the report, but felt that more could be have been done to promote the East-West rail link. Bob said, "The South East has been pressured to take so much new housing that public transport is going to be crucial. In particular, there is likely to be huge government pressure to build large numbers of houses along the Milton Keynes - Bicester - Oxford axis. This rail link is the sole means of giving any new development a sustainable means of mass transport. I am disappointed that Oxfordshire County Council do not promote the East-West rail link in their transport programme."
